www.sexelearning.org.uk, an innovative web based learning programme for professionals involved in promoting the sexual health of the under 25 age group, was launched on the 30th January 2007. The programme was funded by the Southern Health and Social Services Board (SHSSB) and is currently managed by the Southern Health & Social Care Trust Promoting Wellbeing Team. The programme raises awareness of key issues relating to sexual health promotion and will help professionals like GPs, Health Visitors, Nurses, Midwives, Teachers and Youth Workers to deliver consistent support and advice for young people. Launching the programme Dr Michael McBride, Chief Medical Officer, of the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety said: “Sexual health of our population is not as good as it should be and this must change. To achieve this we must equip professionals with the knowledge and skills that enable them to deliver consistent sexual health education, support and advice to young people in a way that positively promotes sexual and emotional health and well being. This innovative approach developed by colleagues in the Southern Board will be a major resource for all professionals in bringing about that change” The first of its kind in Northern Ireland, www.sexelearning.org.uk has been endorsed by academics from the University of Ulster and professionals from the Northern Ireland Practice and Education College for Nursing and Midwifery. The course is free of charge to professionals and learners are advised that this programme will take approximately 6-8 hours to complete. It is advisable to set aside an hour per week to complete each module and aim to have the course completed within 8 weeks. If you feel the website may be relevant to your area of work, you can register to undertake the programme by logging on to www.sexelearning.org.uk. |
