Protect Life Community Development Workers
In April 2008, two Community Development posts were funded by the Southern Health & Social Care Trust under Protect Life. The Community Development Workers are: Nikita Loughran based in Niamh Louise Foundation in Coalisland and Seamus McCabe based in PIPs Newry and Mourne in Newry. The Community Development Workers link with the existing Protect Life Resource Centres and their local communities to develop initiatives that address suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. They work together to cover the entire Southern Health and Social Care Trust, which includes Armagh, Dungannon, Craigavon, Banbridge, Newry and Mourne.
The role of the Protect Life Community Development Workers is to support communities in relation to suicide and self –harm prevention; intervention and postvention to:
• Raise awareness
• Identify local need
• Develop strategies and action plans to address identified need;
• Build local capacity
• Develop community infrastructure
• Develop multi-agency and cross-sectoral partnerships.
• Highlight and share good practice
• Develop services to meet local need.

Protect Life Needs Assessment
The Protect Life Needs Assessment Framework has been designed so that community groups, voluntary agencies and statutory organisations can capture the emerging needs of their staff and/ or volunteers in delivering a service or clients with whom they come in contact in relation to suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. It can also be used to highlight individual needs.
Link to framework
Completed frameworks should be forwarded to the Trust’s Protect Life Co-ordinator to be checked against the Southern Trust Action Plan and any newly identified needs factored into the Protect Life Action Plan so that they can be brought to the attention of the responsible service provider/s and addressed appropriately.
You can contact the Protect Life Coordinator Nuala Quinn, Promoting Well Being Team, St Luke's Hospital, Loughgall Road, Armagh, BT61 7NQ
