According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 2000, every 40 seconds a person dies through suicide somewhere in the world and every 3 seconds a person attempts to die.
In the United Kingdom deaths classified as “events of undetermined intent” along with “intentional self-harm” are jointly reported as suicide. In Northern Ireland in 2008 there were 282 deaths by suicide, 218 of which were male and 64 were female. Suicides are referred to the coroner and take time to be fully investigated therefore there is often a period of time between when the suicide occurs and when it is registered. In 2008 there were 282 deaths by suicide in Northern Ireland. Of these 218 were male and 64 were female. In the Southern Trust area 69 people died by suicide. Of the 69 registered deaths by suicide 19 of these were registered in the Armagh District Council area, 14 in the Craigavon District Council area, 3 in the Banbridge District Council area and 21 in the Newry and Mourne District Council area. Research has shown that suicide prevention and early intervention efforts are successful at saving lives, and by encouraging and assisting people to learn when and how to speak up, suicides can be prevented.
