Promoting Well Being

The Southern Area Boccia Tournament hosted by Southern Area Physical Activity Implementation Group (SAIG) was held on 28^th February 2011 - Dungannon Leisure Centre

The tournament was aimed at people with a disability with 20 teams participating from across the Southern Area.

The tournament was organised in partnership with SHSCT, Craigavon Borough Council, Fit4U Project and Sport & Leisure Users Group (SLUG) and builds on the successful work of these organisations in developing and promoting physical activity opportunities for people with a disability and the promotion of Boccia across the Southern Area.

Sabrina Lynn, Physical activity coordinator SHSCT said, “People with disabilities are four times as likely to be sedentary.  The SAIG group works in partnership to improve access to physical activity provision and participation opportunities for people with a disability.  Today’s event is all about encouraging people with a disability to get and keep active as well as raising the profile of Boccia in the Southern Area.  Boccia is a great activity to both encourage active lifestyles and provide important social networks for people with a disability who are also at a greater risk of social isolation within our community.  We are therefore delighted to be a part of the development and promotion of Boccia across the Southern Area”

The Sport & Leisure User Group (SLUG) who received essential funding from Awards for All to contribute to the event stated:  “The SLUG disability forum works tirelessly to develop and promote sport & physical activity opportunities for people with a disability. Our members see Boccia as a great sport to take part in and we hope to see this tournament become an annual fixture on the sporting calendar”. – Andrew Martin, Chairperson

1^st place – The Owls

2^nd place – MS Portadown Team 1

3rd place – MS Portadown Team 2
