Welcome to Physical Activity
physical_activityWhat do we mean by physical activity? The World Health Organisation (WHO) short definition says it is: “all movements in everyday life, including work, recreation, exercise and sporting activities”.

We know that being active improves our health and helps prevent disease yet 7 out of 10 men and 8 out of 10 women in Northern Ireland do NOT exercise enough to benefit their health.

Physical activity improves our health and helps prevent disease and it need not be strenuous to achieve health benefits.

Being active for you health is as easier than you think.  The Northern Ireland Physical Activity Strategy recommends a minimum of:

  • 30 mins
  • Moderate intensity physical activity
  • Everyday or at least five days a week.

What is moderate intensity physical activity?

You will know if you are being active at moderate intensity by looking for these three simple signs:

  • Breathing heavier
  • Feeling warmer
  • Heart beating faster

Being active, even for short periods can provide health benefits for everyone, regardless of age, weight, health condition or disability.

If you can not manage a full 30 minutes yet don’t worry you can do shorter burst and still feel the benefit, for example:

2 sessions x 15 minutes

or

3 sessions x 10 minutes

Gradually build yourself up to 30 minutes a day!
