Directorate BackgroundAcute care encompasses a wide range of in-patient, outpatient, day case and accident and emergency services. The Trust is committed to providing safe, quality hospital care in line with the regional hospital strategy ‘Developing Better Services’.
Directorate Structure
The Trust’s Acute Services Directorate is made up of five Divisions:
Integrated Maternity and Women’s Health; includes Genitourinary Medicine, Maternity, Obstetrics and Neo Natal/Intensive Care.
Medicine and Unscheduled Care; includes A&E Department, Cardiology, Dermatology, Rehabilitation, Renal Services, Bed Management, Social Services, Discharge Team, Older People’s Medicine.
Surgery and Elective Care; includes General Surgery, Urology, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Oral Dentistry, Waiting List Management, ENT.
Cancer and Clinical services; includes Cancer, Radiology, Critical Care, Pharmacy, Outpatients, Anaesthetics, Infection Control, Laboratories, and Theatres.
Functional Support Services; includes Hospital Administration, Laundry, Facilities Management, Telephony, CSSD, Catering, Mortuary Services, Health and Safety.
Acute Hospital Services
There are two acute hospitals within the Southern Trust; Craigavon Area and Daisy Hill which are supported by a number of local community hospitals. The Trust’s two acute hospitals offer high quality care 24 hours a day. Both provide General Medical (including elderly care), Paediatric, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Surgical Specialties, an Accident and Emergency Department, an Intensive Care and/or High Dependency Unit, Anaesthetics, and a range of investigative facilities, including Pathology and Radiology. Craigavon Area Hospital is one of four Cancer Units in Northern Ireland providing symptomatic breast clinic and breast screening assessment services, chemotherapy and enhanced cancer pharmacological services. Other specialist services offered by the hospital include: a mobile cardiac catheterisation unit providing diagnostic tests, mobile MRI scanner, hyperbaric services and a range of out-patient regional outreach services. Daisy Hill Hospital is a sub-regional unit for renal services, including maintenance haemodialysis. It also provides paediatric ambulatory services and a range of outpatient regional outreach services. Supporting Services Both Craigavon and Daisy Hill Hospitals are supported by a number of non-acute hospitals which provide a range of outpatient, day case, in-patient elderly care and diagnostic and treatment support services to the local population. These include: Banbridge Polyclinic which provides a comprehensive range of outpatient, diagnostic and treatment support services. Armagh Community Hospital which provides a range of out- patient and diagnostic services supported by visiting medical consultants from local acute and regional hospitals. South Tyrone Hospital which provides an extensive range of out-patient and diagnostic facilities, including a minor injuries unit, pain management service, day case ophthalmology, day surgery services, ambulatory paediatrics, CT scans, bone densitometry out-patient renal services and inpatient elderly care services. South Tyrone Hospital has recently been identified as a ‘protected elective’ facility and plans are underway to further develop services provided from this site.
