About our project/programme

AMH MensSana provides a range of mental health promotion programmes responsive to the needs of young people and their key influencers (e.g. parents/carers, youth workers, teachers and health professionals) across the Southern Board area.
Activities include

The delivery of a programme of workshops, entitled Provoking Thought, to young people (14-25 year olds) in schools and youth and community settings. These workshops aim to promote awareness and understanding of mental health and challenge the associated stigma and misconceptions.
The development of mental health promotional resources for young people and their key influencers. Most recently, project staff have worked in partnership with a group of 12-14 year olds to produce a DVD exploring a range of mental health issues that have been identified and dramatised by participants, including bullying, peer pressure and exam stress.
The publication of bi-monthly articles in local newspapers discussing topics relevant to young people’s mental health, e.g. eating distress, and offering information and advice to parents and other key contacts on how to identify and deal with such issues.
The service can be contacted directly by young people and their key contacts for information on available services and sources of support for young people’s mental health needs.
Project staff are also trained to deliver Mental Health First Aid and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training programmes.

What difference did it make – ‘Provoking Thought’ workshop

The following statistics were calculated by averaging figures from evaluation of workshops carried out in 2006:
Feed back from young people indicated that their understanding of mental health was significantly enhanced as a result of the workshop.  When asked to rate their level of understanding on a scale from 1 -4 (1 = good, 4 = poor) the biggest proportion of participants (55%) rated 2 before the workshop.  After the workshop the most frequent had risen to 4 (51%).

How we plan to build on our work in the future

We at AMH MensSana plan to continue to create opportunities for discussion of mental health issues to promote awareness and understanding and reduce stigma and misconceptions through a range of methods and settings, including the home, school, community, workplace, media and the internet.
