About our Project/Programme - Good Morning Neighbour

GOOD MORNING: This is a free and confidential support service for older people living in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust area.  Every morning in our Dungannon office registered Volunteers contact participants by telephone at a set time.  Volunteers check on the participants well being and provide information on special events that are happening in their locality.  If the participants do not answer their telephone at the prearranged time Volunteers then alert the participant’s nominated contact.  These then check on their well being and advice the project accordingly.  This project operates 365 days a year.

GOOD NEIGHBOUR: This is a 365 day a year befriending service for older people living in the Southern Health and Social Care Trust area. Every week registered Volunteers visit an isolated older person in their home. As well as providing support, advice and friendship the volunteers also provide information on special events that are happening in their locality. Volunteers complete a feedback sheet at the end of each visit thus providing them with an opportunity to inform the project officer of any concerns they might have.

What difference did it make?

Quotes from independent evaluation of Good Morning by McCready, Donnelly & Lowry Consultants

Somebody out there cares and they don’t even know me. That is wonderful.’

‘Wonderful to hear a cheerful voice.’

'I would feel isolated if it wasn’t there.’

'The callers make me feel I am important to them.’

'It lifts me.’

'Well so far I haven’t been speaking to anyone else today – so without it I would be more lonely.’

What difference did it make?

Quotes from independent evaluation of Good Neighbour by McCready, Donnelly & Lowry Consultants

‘I enjoy R________ calling.  She is like a sister to me.  It does her good as well.  I could speak to her about anything.  She is a lovely woman.  I have met other members of her family.’

‘The friendship / companionship makes a difference to me.’

‘It’s non-judgemental – he is a true friend.’

‘Friendship – when mum was in hospital the volunteer rang to hear about her progress.’

How we plan to build on our work in the future

Financial support from the Southern Health and Social Care Trust and Armagh and Dungannon Community Safety Partnerships has allowed us to provide training that will allow the Volunteers to support and advise the service users of Good Morning and Good Neighbour.
