About our project/programme
We provide counselling and support to survivors of sexual violence, aged 17 years and older. Our main office is in Portadown but we provide counselling in Armagh, Banbridge, Brownlow, Dungannon & Newry. Whilst also endeavouring to increase public awareness of the issues of sexual violence and its consequences.
Our education worker provides age appropriate programmes to young people aged 11-25 years old, either within a group or on individual level. Exercises incorporate relevant aspects of teenage culture. The duration of the programmes can be designed to meet needs. Topics covered are varied e.g. sexual development, contraception, staying safe, relationships, peer pressure, self esteem etc.
What difference did it make
With survivors we continually address self esteem/confidence issues, feelings of isolation, blame and relationship difficulties. Whilst developing coping strategies to manage their lives more effectively.
With young people we educate and equip then with correct knowledge & information re sexual issues. We facilitate informal discussion groups. We also provide parent support/education workshops.
How we plan to build on our work in the future
We would like to make our service as accessible as possible to survivors living in the Southern Area Health & Social Care Trust, by offering outreach in the areas of high referral rates and explore new alternatives in the Dungannon area. We are planning a support group for survivors and another for family/friends of survivors to be convened on a regular basis.
We would also like to give all those working with young people the opportunity to utilise our education worker to address those sexual health queries and issues being raised by the young people themselves.
