|
Name of Group/Organisation Department of Primary Care Southern Health & Social Services Board About our Project / Programme At the launch of the Draft Suicide Strategy the Minister for Health at the time, Shaun Woodward, announced that there was a need for Depression Awareness Training for GP’s. A regional planning group was convened to take the initiative forward and agreed the following aim and objectives.
Aim: To develop an educational programme which will improve the detection, management and treatment of depression in primary care.
Objectives: 1. To help reduce the incidence of suicide & self harm in patients at risk. 2. To promote a range of complementary approaches for the management of depression. 3. To ensure pathways for referral are clear in each area. 4. To promote the empowerment of patients and their carers and ensure where possible they take responsibility for their care and treatment. 5. To assess the effectiveness of the training in the early detection and treatment of depression in primary care. 6. To promote self care for staff within primary care. 7. To support practices to deliver high quality for patients with depression in line with GMS and QOF Guidelines. What difference did it make There has been a very positive response from GP’s in the Southern area with approximately half of all GP practices having attended the training. How do we plan to build on the work in the future A rolling programme of training is being planned through the SALT (Southern Learning as Teams) training which is organised on a monthly basis around the SHSSB area.
