Mental Health is a matter of universal concern, the importance of mental health is gaining growing recognition within Northern Ireland in the UK and across Europe. The cost of mental illhealth in Northern Ireland is said to amount to almost £3million (NIAMH 2003).
It is important that we all recognise that we all have mental health needs; that mental well-being underpins all health and well-being; that mental health, like physical health, is a resource to be protected and promoted. The Health Education authority defines mental health as, “…the emotional and spiritual resilience which enables us to enjoy life and to survive pain, disappointment and sadness.
It is a positive sense of well being and an underlying belief in our own and others dignity and self worth,” (HEA 1998). The Mental Health Promotion team aims to work in partnership with key agencies to ensure that positive mental health is promoted in all settings and across all life stages. The Mental Health Promotion Team can provide advice, guidance and consultancy to assist groups and organisations to implement mental health promotion practices within their sphere of work.
